Happy 4th of July and 250th Birthday, America!!!

Celebrate. Reflect. Recharge.

No matter how old or young you are another trip around the sun, and another birthday is always a great time to celebrate.

What are your plans for this Fourth of July weekend?

For many, the holiday means a three-day weekend filled with backyard barbecues, parades, fireworks, family gatherings, or perhaps simply a chance to slow down. I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to it! There are projects at work and at home that I'll be working on before the holiday, but for the first time in a long time, my plan is to truly take the weekend off and recharge. If you know me, you know that's easier said than done!

As leaders, we often encourage others to take care of themselves, yet many of us struggle to follow our own advice. There is always another email to answer, another project to finish, another item on the to-do list. We convince ourselves that we'll slow down "after this week" or "once things settle down."

The truth is, sometimes life never slows down unless we intentionally choose to slow down.

Self-care isn't selfish—it's essential. We cannot pour into others if our own cup is empty. Taking time to rest, laugh, reconnect with family and friends, or simply enjoying a quiet moment isn't a luxury; it's an investment in our well-being and our ability to lead others well.

This year, our Independence Day celebration carries additional meaning as we continue recognizing America's 250th birthday—a milestone that invites us to celebrate our nation's history while reflecting on the values that have shaped our communities: courage, perseverance, service, resilience, and hope.

As leaders, these same values continue to guide us today. Whether we're leading a family, a team, an organization, or a community, our influence is often measured not by how busy we are, but by how well we care for others—and ourselves.

So, as you celebrate this holiday, I encourage you to make time for both celebration and reflection.

Ideas to celebrate and tips to take care of yourself:

  • Watch the fireworks.

  • Take a walk.

  • Read a book.

  • Sit quietly on the porch with your favorite beverage.

  • If you need a break, take one—whether it’s a physical one or a mental one. Do something which brings you joy.

  • Have lunch with a friend.

  • Do a puzzle.

  • Eat well—eat a healthy snack. Dark chocolate is my favorite.

  • Take a catnap.

  • Spend time with friends.

  • Spend time with family.

  • Spend time with yourself.

Whatever brings you joy, give yourself permission to enjoy it fully. Because sometimes the most productive thing a leader can do is pause, breathe, and recharge.

“If you take care of yourself, you’ll be around to take care of others.

If you don’t. You won’t”

Reflection Questions:

  1. How can and will you take better care of yourself?

  2. What traditions bring you joy each Fourth of July?

  3. What values do you hope to pass on to the next generation?

  4. How can you celebrate not only our nation's independence, but also the people who enrich your life?

  5. What will you do this weekend to care for yourself so you can continue caring for others?

Your Action Plan:

  1. My Goal:

  2. Action:

  3. Who can support me in achieving my goal?

  4. Date to begin:

  5. How will I know I made progress?

As we celebrate Independence Day and America's 250th birthday, may you enjoy time with family and friends doing the things you want to do rather than those you think you ”have to do”, reflect on the freedoms and opportunities we often cherish, and return Monday renewed, refreshed, and ready to continue making a positive difference—one heart, one soul, one life at a time.

Happy Fourth of July!
