Halfway Through the Year: A Leader's Guide to Reflection, Growth, and New Momentum

Can you believe we're just past the halfway point of the year?

What a great time to take a few minutes or longer, to celebrate the first half of the year. Whether this year has unfolded exactly as you planned and you’ve accomplished your goals, if it’s taken a few unexpected turns where you decided to change directions, or just plain hung in there – now is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and perform a mid-year evaluation.

Notice I didn't say a mid-year critique.

Too often we're our own toughest critics. I know I’m my own best or worst critic. Instead of focusing on everything left to accomplish, I encourage you to begin by celebrating how much you have accomplished!  Let’s get started.

First—Celebrate!

No matter what has or hasn't happened during the first six months of the year, there is always something worth celebrating.

  • Maybe you reached a long-awaited goal.

  • Maybe you learned a new skill or sharpened a current one.

  • Perhaps you strengthened a relationship, overcame a challenge, or simply kept putting one foot in front of the other during a difficult time.

Take a few moments to reflect: You may want to ask yourself:

  • What went well during the first half of the year?

  • What accomplishments are you most proud of so far?

  • What lessons have you learned?

  • Who has encouraged, supported, or inspired you?

  • Who do you want to thank or acknowledge?

Celebrating progress gives us the energy to continue moving forward.

Second—Evaluate

After you've celebrated, it's time to honestly assess where you are and evaluate and decide if there are things you’d like to change for the second half of the year.

Ask yourself:

  • Did I accomplish some—or all—of the goals I set for myself?

  • If not, what got in my way?

  • Are those goals still important to me?

  • Have my priorities changed?

  • What have I learned about myself during the past six months?

  • Sometimes:

    • Sometimes the answer isn't that we failed.

    • Sometimes the answer is that life happened.

    • Sometimes opportunities appeared that weren't part of our original plan.

    • Sometimes we simply need to change direction.

I'll share one of my own examples.

Earlier this year, I had hoped to make significant progress on my second book. Truthfully, I didn't make nearly as much progress as I expected. Somewhere along the way, I became sidetracked and even shifted my focus to a different book idea.

After a conversation with a trusted friend, I realized my original vision still mattered. That conversation helped me regroup, refocus, and return to writing the second book I had intended to write in the first place.

Sometimes we don't need a new destination—we simply need a fresh perspective.

On the upside, something exciting happened that wasn't originally on my list of goals. My friend Julie and I began working on our leadership podcast, The People Side of Leadership. While it's been far more work than either of us anticipated, it's also been incredibly rewarding. We've both talked about launching a podcast for years and finally decided there was no time like the present. Our targeted launch date is Wednesday, September 16th.

Not every worthwhile opportunity fits neatly into our original plan and sometimes the detours become some of our greatest adventures.

Third and Finally—Recalibrate and Get Started on the Second Half of the Year

Remember –

  • A mid-year evaluation isn't about dwelling on what's behind us.

  • It's about preparing for what's ahead.

  • Spend some intentional time with yourself.

  • Ask yourself the difficult questions.

  • Be honest.

  • Be curious.

  • Be kind to yourself.

  • Then decide where you want to focus your energy during the remainder of the year.

  • You don't need to start over.

  • You simply need to start from where you are today.

Questions to Consider

  • What do I want the second half of this year to look like?

  • What goal deserves renewed attention?

  • What distraction do I need to let go of?

  • What relationship do I want to strengthen?

  • What is one step I can take this week to move closer to my goals?

  • How will I make time to care for myself while pursuing what matters most?

Leadership isn't about perfection. It's about learning, growing, adapting, and continuing to move forward.

So, celebrate your progress, evaluate your priorities, recalibrate your direction, all while you embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.

The year isn't over.

In many ways, it's just beginning.

"One of the greatest freedoms we have is the freedom to choose how we lead. Every day we choose whether to encourage or criticize, to listen or interrupt, to build trust or erode it, to focus on ourselves or serve others. Leadership, like freedom, is both a privilege and a responsibility."
